Kerry warns U.S. is evaluating role in Middle East peace talks

RABAT (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday Washington was evaluating whether to continue its role in Middle East peace talks, signaling his patience with the Israelis and Palestinians was running out.

Speaking during a visit to Morocco after a week of setbacks, Kerry said there was a limit to U.S. efforts if the parties themselves were unwilling to move forward.

"This is not an open-ended effort, it never has been. It is reality check time, and we intend to evaluate precisely what the next steps will be," Kerry said, adding he would return to Washington on Friday to consult with the Obama administration.

U.S. officials say Kerry had been blindsided by recent Israeli and Palestinian moves that had compromised undertakings made when they launched the latest round of talks aimed at ending their enduring conflict last July.

"They say they want to continue, neither party has said they have called it off, but we are not going to sit there indefinitely," Kerry said, making his bleakest assessment yet of talks that he has dedicated a huge amount of energy to.

The negotiations were catapulted into crisis at the weekend when Israel refused to act on a previously agreed release of Palestinian prisoners unless it had assurances the Palestinians would continue talks beyond an initial end-April deadline.

Kerry flew to Jerusalem to try to find a solution. Just when he believed a convoluted deal was within reach, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signed 15 international treaties, making clear he was ready to beat a unilateral path to world bodies unless he saw more movement from the Israelis.

A senior Palestinian official, Nabil Shaath, told Reuters that Abbas had not intended to upset Kerry, but rather to shine a spotlight on Israel's failure to release the prisoners.

"I think (Kerry) will return because we have not abandoned the process," said the veteran negotiator, speaking in Ramallah, the Palestinians' administrative capital in the West Bank.

"We will continue these negotiations as we agreed, and I wish for once that America's patience runs out -- with Israel and not the Palestinians," he added.

STRUGGLE

With both sides looking to blame the other for the impasse, Israel's centrist finance minister, Yair Lapid, said he questioned whether Abbas wanted a deal, pointing to a lengthy list of Palestinian demands published on Maan news agency.

These included lifting a blockade on the Gaza Strip, and freeing a group of high profile prisoners, including Marwan Barghouti, jailed a decade ago over a spate of suicide bombings.

"(Abbas) should know that at this point in time his demands are working against him. No Israeli will negotiate with him at any price," said Lapid, one of the more moderate voices within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rightist coalition.

Kerry has spent much of his first year as America's top diplomat invested in the Middle East peace process, and has visited the region more than a dozen times.

He broke off twice from his current 12-day trip in Europe and the Middle East to see Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an apparently effort to salvage the peace negotiations.

The talks have struggled from the start, stalling over Palestinian opposition to Israel's demand that it be recognized as a Jewish state, and over the issue of fast-growing Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Palestinians want an independent state in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem - lands captured by Israel in the 1967 war. While all parties say negotiations are the best path to peace, Palestinians say they may eventually resort to international bodies to force Israel to make concessions.

Paula Deen closes restaurant at center of harassment lawsuit

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Celebrity chef Paula Deen's popular Savannah, Georgia, restaurant, which was at the center of a racially charged lawsuit against her, abruptly closed on Thursday after a decade in business.

"Thank you for 10 great years," Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, owned by Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, told customers on its website. "Uncle Bubba's is now closed."

A white employee of Uncle Bubba's sued Deen and her brother claiming she had been the victim of sexual harassment and that there was a pattern of racial discrimination against black employees at the restaurant.

Deen said in a deposition in the case that she had used a racial slur, which prompted Scripps Networks Interactive Inc to drop her cooking show from its cable television channel, the Food Network.

The controversy prompted companies such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Target Corp and Home Depot Inc to stop selling Deen products.

A federal judge last summer dismissed the lawsuit.

Hiers closed the restaurant "in order to explore development options for the waterfront property on which the restaurant is located," Jaret Keller, spokesman for the Deen family, said in a written statement.

"At this point, no specific plans have been announced and a range of uses are under consideration in order to realize the highest and best use for the property."

Keller declined to comment on whether the restaurant's closure was related to the lawsuit.

Deen has lately been staging a comeback, with The Wall Street Journal reporting that a private equity firm agreed earlier this year to invest $75 to $100 million in the recently formed Paula Deen Ventures.

Pussy Riot protesters cleared of religious hatred charge

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two women from Russia's Pussy Riot protest group who were jailed for a song deriding President Vladimir Putin were cleared in a Moscow court on Friday of inciting religious hatred.

But the court knocked only one month off their two-year sentences, upholding a charge of hooliganism.

Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova spent nearly two years in prison after performing a protest song against Putin in Moscow's main cathedral in 2012.

Many in the West criticized the harshness of the sentence, saying it was evidence of a clamp-down on dissent.

The two protesters were released in December, three months before completing their sentences, under an amnesty to mark the 20th anniversary of Russia's constitution.

In the same month, Russia's Supreme Court ordered a review of their case, saying that lower courts overlooked mitigating factors, and did not provide evidence of a portion of the verdict that says they were motivated by "hatred of a certain social group".

The latest court ruling means the two remain convicted of hooliganism, a charge that carries up to seven years in prison.

Letterman retirement gives CBS chance to draw younger viewers to late night

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - David Letterman's surprise retirement announcement gives CBS a much-needed chance to lure younger viewers to his late-night television time slot, matching the recent elevation of Jimmy Fallon that reenergized rival NBC's "Tonight Show" franchise, according to media executives.

Since the 39-year old Fallon succeeded Jay Leno as star of "The Tonight Show," NBC's ratings for the 11:35 p.m. hour have jumped both in overall audience numbers and among the key demographic of viewers aged 18 to 49 that advertisers most desire.

The surge comes as a larger number of young viewers are tuning in to Fallon, a veteran of "Saturday Night Live," as he masquerades in elaborate skits as rock stars and politicians, or plays Egg Russian Roulette with celebrity guests willing to risk having raw eggs smashed over their heads on national television.

In the most recent Nielsen ratings, "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" averaged 5.2 million viewers, up 41 percent from Leno's numbers before his February departure from NBC.

Ratings for both Letterman and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on the Walt Disney Co.-owned ABC network trail with slightly less than 3 million viewers apiece.

Letterman's announcement on Thursday during the taping of "Late Show with David Letterman" in New York that he plans to retire sometime in 2015, when his contract expires, represents the latest upheaval in a changing of the U.S. television's late-night guard.

The three shows together generated more than $400 million in advertising sales in 2012, according to the latest numbers available from ad tracking firm Kantar Media.

And the three shows all remain large, though shrinking, profit centers because the networks cram in more commercials per hour late at night than they do in prime time, said Brad Adgate, research director at media and advertising firm Horizon Media. Production costs are held down, with guests being paid at union scale rates, he said.

CBS has not said who might succeed Letterman, but the network needs to find someone who can siphon away some of Fallon's younger viewers, media executives said.

Fallon has also developed a huge social network following, an increasingly important marketing avenue for networks to promote their shows.

YouTube registered more than 4 million views of Fallon's parody of Bruce Springsteen's hit song "Born to Run," in which he and Springsteen lampooned New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's bridge-closing scandal.

Craig Ferguson, star of CBS's "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" at 12:35 a.m., was reportedly promised Letterman's slot in 2012 when CBS renewed the contracts for the two men. Both shows are produced by Letterman's Worldwide Pants company.

But ratings for the 51-year old Ferguson's show are well behind those of "Late Night with Seth Meyers," which occupies the 12:35 slot on Comcast's NBC network.

Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," is considered a possibility to succeed Letterman on CBS. So is the Viacom owned cable channel's Stephen Colbert, host of "The Colbert Report." Both have sizeable followings among younger viewers.

Whoever gets the "Late Show" host chair has a larger role to play at CBS beyond opening monologues and chatting with guests. The late-night host creates a "brand" for the entire network, said Jeff Gaspin, former chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment.

"The host of late night represents the network on a daily basis and in most cases for decades," said Gaspin. "Along with news and sports talent, they are the only entertainment personalities to do so."

Five 'Game of Thrones' Destinations Fans Should Visit

n">(Reuters) - In the bleak and dismal break between seasons of "Game of Thrones", what better way for fans to keep in the spirit of proceedings than by visiting one of the exotic lands where filming for the programme took place?

Following are locations where the show's incest, pillaging, and frequent death run riot. The article below is an edited version of a blog compiled by the travel site GoEuro.co.uk, and contains some spoilers.

Northern Ireland

Much of the fictitious land of Westeros is located in Northern Ireland. Winter may have just left the Emerald Isle, but given Ireland's average 300 rainy or cloudy days a year, many of the locations filmed here were used to depict Winterfell, the north, and other less sunny parts of the Seven Kingdoms.

Dark Hedges, Northern Ireland

Those who want to tread the same grounds as the Family Stark should explore the area of Downpatrick, County Down, where Castle Ward was used to film parts of the family home. Nearby Audley's Castle and Woods were the location for the family's war encampment in Season One. Further north you'll find the setting for Castle Black - the abandoned Magheramorne quarry which is currently under proposal to be turned into a centre for adventure sports.

Nearby Redhall Estate appeared in both Seasons Two and Three under various guises, including as the inn where Catelyn Tully captured Tyrion Lannister before taking him to her twisted sister in Eyrie. (For bonus fan points, the rock formations that make up Eyrie actually lie in Greece and had the castle grafted onto them).

With eerie in mind, Ballymoney's Dark Hedges provided the backdrop for the iconic Kingsroad. As one of the most photographed sites in Ireland, their dramatic appearance was perfect for the award-winning series.

It seems Ireland's rugged terrain is pretty adaptable as a mythological setting, with Sandy Brae Path at Newry and Mourne used as the site of the twin horse statues marking the entrance to the Dothraki holy ground. There's something especially fantastic about this area, as the Mourne Mountains are said to have inspired C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia".

Our final tip for Northern Ireland is to head to the Caves of Cushendun, County Antrim, where one of the more disturbing scenes from Season Two was filmed: Melisandre's birthing of the shadow baby. The area itself is quaint and scenic.

Malta

Leaving Ireland and heading south to warmer climes, we find ourselves in Malta, a landscape that constituted much of King's Landing in Season One. The country's former capital Mdina was used to represent the central city of Westeros to great effect; the many well-preserved, historical buildings fit perfectly with the theme of exotic, medieval grandeur. Local structures on the Mediterranean island, such as the Mdina Bridge, Pjazza Mesquita, and Verdala Palace are all located close to one another.

San Anton Palace Malta

Lord Stark's announcement to Cersei that he knew of her incestuous secret was filmed in the Dominican St Dominic Monastery, after it was transformed into the Gardens of the Red Keep. His subsequent comeuppance took place nearby at Fort Manoel. Many similar structures close by were used, such as Fort St Angelo where Arya chasing the cat beneath the castle was filmed.

As the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, Malta housed the Iron Throne for some time. Fittingly, one of the venues for this was the San Anton Palace, in real life a residence of the island's president.

One of the few drawbacks of Mdina as a set is that it lies inland, unlike its seaside Westeros counterpart, and could therefore only be used to depict interior shots of the city.

Azure Window, Gozo

Just a short boat trip away, the natural backdrop of the Azure Window, located on Malta's smaller sister island Gozo, was used as the setting of Daenerys Targaryens's wedding to Khal Drogo. The area is still free for tourists to explore, however, part of the reason Malta was not utilized in following seasons was due to disputes between island officials and the production crew over damage that may have been inflicted upon the natural wonder. Uber-fans looking to recreate the scenes for their own special day will be relieved to know that weddings are still allowed here. Perhaps just hold back on the hundreds of horses, weapons, and fighting, to avoid further deterioration.

Croatia

The second season saw filming of King's Landing moved to Croatia, specifically Dubrovnik and Lokrum. With Dubrovnik being a seaside walled city, similar to the Westeros capital, the crew were offered additional opportunities to film exterior shots as well as the interior shots they had been limited to in Mdina.

Old Town Dubrovnik and Lokrum Island

The surrounding waters were put to good use, providing the setting for the epic Battle of Blackwater, whilst Fort Lovrijenac became the new Red Keep. Sections of Qarth in the Essos continent were also filmed here, with the Minceta Tower used as the exterior of the House of The Undying.

Many other parts of Qarth were filmed on the nearby island of Lokrum, including the botanical gardens, used for outdoor scenes such as the welcome party thrown by Xaro. Lokrum itself is said to be cursed, so much like the characters in Thrones, you would be wise to visit but not to stay. Back on the mainland, the gates of Qarth were constructed in Dubac quarry, along with King's Landing's waterside garden in Season 3 which was located at the Trsteno Arboretum.

Iceland

Volcanic but frozen, Iceland truly is the Land of Ice and Fire. Barren, alien, beautiful but brutal, this mysterious landscape is the perfect location for the land Beyond The Wall. Line Producer Chris Newman said they wanted as much of the scenery to be as true to life as possible, and that they weren't "doing anything in post-production to add mountains or snow or anything".

Myvatn Lake, Iceland

Filming spots included Höfoabrekkuheioi, the Myrdalsjokull glacier, the Vatnajökull glacier - Europe's largest ice cap- and Lake Myvatn which, although a protected area, is easily accessible for visitors. Annual events hosted here include the Icelandic marathon. The lake is littered with unusual lava formations, aptly known as "black castles". While a majority of scenes were filmed at the Lake, Iceland's Skaftafell National Park was also put to good use.

While the life of an actor may seem glamorous, those who were involved in Icelandic scenes had to brave severely cold conditions. The scene where John Snow fights Qhorin Halfhand near the end of Season Two took place on a cliff with a 500 m-(1,500 ft-) drop, the snow so deep the actors kept sinking into it during an exhausting two-day shoot.

Morocco

Heading back to a more comfortable environment, Morocco was used as the primary setting for many of Daenerys' travels in Season Three. This was actually a revisit for the production team to the area - it was originally used as King's Landing in the unaired pilot.

Ait Benhaddou

Although some of the shots here were used to represent King's Landing in the third season, the historic city of Ait Benhaddou, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, was utilized to represent Yunkai, or the Yellow City traveled to by The Mother of Dragons. The beautifully sandy citadel, known widely for its kasbahs, is no stranger to the limelight, having been a backdrop for blockbusters such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Gladiator.

Another shooting location is Essaouira, Western Morocco, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the series it served as the location for the slave-trading city of Astapor, and housed the Plaza of Pride and the Palace of The Good Masters. In real life, this little city is buzzing with culture, its historical beauty and stunning sea views preserved thanks to strict building restrictions.
